My Interests

Description of Picture.

  • Autos - I enjoy cars, especially from the '50s! I have good shots of former cars that will be posted on another page. I always wanted an Edsel when I was a teen. The picture here was taken at a Fourth of July parade.     My favorite was the '57 Mercury Parklane Cruiser. In the future I plan to create a page to post pictures of all the vehicles that I/we have owned.
  • Travel - Diane and I love traveling around the world.  Some day we plan to post pictures of our travels: Netherlands, Australia.  Also domestic trips: from California to New Hampshire.
  • Church - We are members of Cutlerville East Christian Reformed Church.
  • Books  -  I (Martin) am an avid reader and will post books that I have read and recommend:
    -  "Dutch Chicago" by Robert Swierenga (Eerdmans).
    -  "Uprooted", by Canadian Anne van Arragon Hutton.  It is out of print; she has a web site so check that out. http://www.hutton.org/uprooted/
    -  "Now, That's a Good Question", by R.C.Sproul (Tyndale).  Clear answers to a lot of difficult questions.  I highly recommend it as well.  It is one of many books from Ligonier Ministries.
    -  Another excellent book about the post war immigration to Canada is "To All My Children" by Albert VanderMey (Paideia Press)  It has been reprinted and available through  Vanderheide Publishing Company
  • History  -  As you can figure out from the "book" section, history is a favorite. It is for both Diane and me.  This is especially true of family history.  We will be posting genealogical information from both the Rustenburg and Buteyn sides of the family.   One book that has really grabbed the attention of North American historians is "The Island at the Center of the World" by Russell Shorto.   It is the epic story of Dutch Manhattan and the forgotten Colony that really shaped what the United States became.  Long forgotten documents of that time period are being translated.  Because of the picture these present, historians are literally rewriting USA history.  http://islandatthecenteroftheworld.com
